The issue
Following resident concerns about speeding vehicles in Coveney and Wardy Hill, we’ve been working to find effective solutions. After consulting with both the community and Highways experts, we’ve ruled out traditional measures like speed bumps (which can cause new hazards) and excessive signage (often ineffective).
Our solution
We’ve installed permanent posts for Mobile Vehicle Activated Signs (MVAS) in problem areas. These MVAS signs:
- Display approaching vehicles’ speeds
- Gently remind drivers to slow down
- Collect valuable traffic data to guide future safety measures
We need your help!
The Parish Council already owns two MVAS units, but we need a volunteer to:
π Charge the device batteries (about once per fortnight)
π Rotate the signs between locations as needed
π Download speed data periodically (we’ll show you how)
Why volunteer for this?
- Make a visible difference in road safety
- Flexible commitment (just a few hours monthly)
- No special skills needed – full training provided
- Help shape future traffic calming decisions
